Does Salary Link to Happiness?

Recent research by The Guardian has highlighted the world’s happiest jobs.

The results were combined with findings of nine other surveys to produce this comprehensive list of officially happy occupations…
1. Engineers. Freedom, team role and cross over with hobbies were cited as key reasons why engineers were so happy in their jobs.
2. Teachers. Variety, creativity and ‘light bulb moments’ helped confirm that teachers are happy in their jobs.
3. Nurses. The ability to have a real, positive impact made a difference to nurses within this survey.
4. Medical Practitioners. This role is happy due to the variety of interesting people, teamwork and the reward of helping people.
5. Gardeners. Working outside, freedom and achieving transformation are the advantages of this role.
6. Construction workers. Participants were happy in their job as construction workers due to the satisfaction of creating something from scratch and working with a variety of skilled people.
7. Personal Assistants. PAs enjoy the business insight, diverse work and job satisfaction of their role.

These roles attract a salary of £18,000 – £40,000 per annum. Only the Medical Examiner earns more with an average yearly salary of £70,000. So – money isn’t everything.

What does this mean for HR and Relocation managers?

In order to retain and mobilise talent, the perfect combination is one of the happiest jobs within one of the happiest countries.

The happiest countries in 2015 (research via Telegraph) are:

1. Switzerland

2. Iceland
3. Denmark
4. Norway
5. Canada
6. Finland
7. Netherlands
8. Sweden
9. New Zealand

Of course, an essential ingredient to a happy relocation is the preparation and support provided – to HR managers and assignees alike.
